For me, the inspiration strikes randomly—waiting for the bus, riding a train, walking to work, or just wandering around my hometown of Fullerton, California. I don’t own a car, so I spend a good amount of time walking. This slower pace of travel, by foot, allows me time to mull over things I’m reading, conversations I’ve had, films I’ve seen, new music I’ve found, problems in my life, my community, America, the world. Traveling on foot, I tend to notice things people might miss in their cars—homeless people, weird industrial landscapes, trash, bugs, plants, the weather, etc.

When I was a younger man, I wrote in my journals obsessively. Writing was a form of therapy. It still is, but lately it comes out as poems (that often read like journal entries). At the heart of most of these poems is usually some inner conflict I’m working out. I grew up religious and now consider myself agnostic, but religious themes still percolate into my writing—questions of meaning, morality, justice, purpose. Being an agnostic—that is, admitting that I don’t know whether or not there’s a God or a larger meaning to life—I’m constantly in a state of existential limbo between purpose and purposelessness. When I was younger, this uncertainty was painful. The older I get, the more okay I am with it—the not knowing keeps me always searching, reading, and writing. The unknowing, the existential limbo, is often the spark of poetic inspiration.

The title of this, my second collection of poetry, comes from a real dream I had that sort of illustrates the overarching theme of many of these poems. In the dream, I am an astronaut who (for mysterious reasons) wears uncomfortable wooden crosses for shoes. I am, at the same time, a man of science and a religious ascetic. In real life, I am somewhere between these two poles—a lover of learning who is still haunted by questions that can only be described as religious.

Jesse La Tour
December 2016

BOOKMACHINE books + zines
www.bookmachinestore.blogspot.com
The Magoski Arts Colony
www.magoskiartscolony.com
The Downtown Fulleton Art Walk
www.fullertonartwalk.comBookmachinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09439180749829482797noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6371842191241991589.post-25851809498039993372016-10-05T10:26:00.003-07:002016-10-05T10:26:47.857-07:00Bookmachine presents: A Burger Zine Release!

You are invited to the latest zine release at Bookmachine books + zines (located inside the Magoski Arts Colony) featuring the release of a burger-themed zine by English students at CSUF. There will be zines for sale, and burger-inspired artwork. This event is this Friday, October 7th from 6-10pm during the Downtown Fullerton Art Walk. As always, this event is FREE and open to the public.

Zine description:

What is a burger? A meaty patty between two buns. A veggie burger, a black-bean burger. A metaphorical (meat-aphorical?) burger. Are we even talking about meat? Is the meat implied? Who decides what a burger is anyway, a dictionary? A linguist? Metaphysics? (If Theseus took apart a burger and put it back... together…) Psychology, anthropology? Are burgers just people, people’s memories, people’s traditions and identity, a bit of nationalism, a product of regional tastes and availability? A sign of the times, or a relic of the past? Gentrification in motion or a cheap commodity? A delicious collection of molecules? We’re just messing around, we don’t know what a burger is. We’re just putting a bunch of thoughts together between two pages. This zine all started with the idea of writing about our friends' favorite food memories, leading to this specific quest of deconstructing The Burger™. So just like we did, we hope you, die Bürger, spread this Burger out on the table, pick it apart, take out the parts you don’t like, ask for more of those you do, digest it, and eventually toss it somewhere.

Editors:
Wendy Anguiano
Chenglin Lee
Nicole Vandever
Jessica Flores
Adrian Agacer

Contributors:
All editors,
Alyssa Perez
Mandy Z Espinoza
Catie Ciavarella

Bookmachine is located inside the Magoski Arts Colony.

Love,
Bookmachine books + zines
www.bookmachinestore.blogspot.com
The Magoski Arts Colony
www.magoskiartscolony.com
The Downtown Fullerton Art Walk
www.fullertonartwalk.com

You are invited to the next art show at BOOKMACHINE: Books + Zines: Confessions of a Fashion Designer: Artwork by Sergio M. Arroyo. The opening reception is Friday, September 2, 2011 from 7-11pm during the Downtown Fullerton Art Walk. This event is FREE and open to the public.

Artist's statement:

The world of Haute Couture fashion has always interested me since I was very young. I remember seeing the movie Gone With The Wind, at nine years old, and being inspired by the beautiful women's costumes. After watching Gone With The Wind, I drew dresses that resembled what Scarlet O'hara wore. It was not until my senior year in high school that I finally grew enough balls to take a fashion class, where I learned how to sew.

What I like about fashion is that it can display beauty through wearable art. Designing beautiful clothes gives me a calm feeling, like everything is going to be perfect in an imperfect, chaotic world. In times of stress, beauty can be calming. And seeing beauty, whatever you see as beautiful, can give you hope to help create a better future.

--Sergio M. Arroyo

Hope to see you there!

The opening reception is Friday, August 5 from 7-11pm during the Downtown Fullerton Artwalk.

Paul D'Elia is the artist behind Screenin 4 A Change Studios out of Los Angeles, CA. The effort started as a screen printing experiment with gig posters during college to help promote and give back to the DIY punk music scene. Paul grew up calling that scene his home and it remains the source for much of his inspiration today. Over the past 7 years “Screenin 4 A Change” has transitioned from a small idea into a full fledge artistic perspective that is both exciting and provocative. In this evolution he’s expanded his mediums to include drawings, collages and paintings along with screen prints. His work has been displayed in various galleries and shows around the world and has been included in books and magazines.

Hope to see you there!

Love,

BOOKMACHINE books + zines
The Downtown Fullerton Art Walk
Screenin 4 a ChangeBookmachinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09439180749829482797noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6371842191241991589.post-91890818142571814962011-06-28T13:21:00.000-07:002011-06-28T13:26:31.308-07:00This Friday: Art by Christie Yuri Noh!

You are cordially invited to the next art show at BOOKMACHINE books + zines: The Great Cover-up: art by Christie Yuri Noh.
